Quarter 2 and first semester will end on this Thursday, January 16. There is NO SCHOOL this Friday, the 17th. The new semester will kick off on Tuesday, January 21. Some classes on your student’s schedule may be changing with shifts in changing semester classes or other factors. Please verify your schedule via skyward. If you have any questions, please reach out to the counseling center.

FAFSA Night for Seniors this week: It is time for senior students to complete their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Alta High will be hosting FAFSA Completion Night with financial aid experts from the state on Wednesday, January 15 from 6:00 – 8:30 pm in the Alta High School Media Center. Parents and students are invited to attend. It is important that the parent and student have created the StudentAid.govaccount prior to this event.
Many colleges and universities require a FAFSA in order to award scholarships. A FAFSA is required to apply for the Opportunity Scholarship. Please bring the following items:
- Student’s Social Security Number
- Driver’s License Number
- Parents’ 2023 Federal Income Tax Returns
- Parent and Student StudentAid.gov account information
Attention Juniors and Seniors! Are you Bilingual? If so, apply now for the Seal of Biliteracy
The Seal of Biliteracy is placed on your transcript by the state of Utah to certify for employers and universities that you have demonstrated proficiency in English and at least one world language. You can show proficiency in a language by taking the AAPPL test, or by earning a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP world language test. You can show proficiency in English by earning a minimum of an 18 on the English portion of the ACT, earning a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP English test or by taking the AAPPL test in English. The application deadline is Friday, Jan. 17th 2025. Complete the application online at: https://sealofbiliteracy.canyonsdistrict.org.

Spring Sports Eligibility: We are now over halfway through quarter 2, tryouts for Spring sports are approaching. This is a reminder for all students and parents that Quarter 2 grades and attendance are looked at for qualifying for spring sports. Please check those official requirements with the head coach of your desired sport. Students, make sure you are attending all your classes, arriving their on-time, and doing the required class work.
U of U Engineering Summer 2025 Internship: The application will open on December 30th and close on February 15th . This is an 8-week program that will run from June 9th until August 1st . Interns will be matched with a current faculty member to work in their lab on research projects throughout the summer. This is an unpaid internship, interns are expected to work up to 30 hours per week. Students who will be graduating in 2026 or 2027 may apply.

- Copy of unofficial transcripts
- 1 Letter of Recommendation from Science, Math, Technology, or Engineering Teacher
- Write a 2-page essay response to a prompt on the application

Monthly Digital Citizenship Tip: Explaining the News: Discussing the news with your kids is a great way to help them think critically about current events and process what they’re seeing. Common Sense Media provides helpful tips for families concerned about the impact of current events on kids. News stories can often be dramatic and may include disturbing images or information. Talking about the news as a family helps everyone stay informed while checking in on how each member is feeling and responding. Canyons Family Center Resources: Our district has several classes and resources for families to help parents and students in different scenarios and situations. Please reference this attached flier to see these classes to see if there are any resources you would like to take advantage of.
Alta High School Lost and Found: We are cleaning out our lost and found located in the attendance office. If your student has misplaced something you have been looking for, please check the lost and found as soon as you can. The lost and found will be cleaned out on January 24th. Any items left will be donated.
