Week of October 11-13, 2021
We are an inclusive learning community with a tradition of inspiring, supporting, and collaborating with students
as they prepare to be engaged citizens in their pursuit of continuous success.
Positive Behavior Interventions and Support: Link Crew is our way we connect our freshmen students with our upperclassmen. Each 9th grade Advisory class is assigned two Link Leaders. These leaders check-in with their 9th graders several times per month and provide support as needed. Thanks to our Link Leaders for making a difference!
End of 1st Quarter is coming soon: Just a reminder that the end of the first marking period is Friday, October 22nd.
Alta Hawkeye News:Check out our student newspaper for articles on the latest at Alta High School. Read about the opening of our new school store, student life, and get a sneak peek at our new gym floor: https://altahawkeye.org/
Sterling Scholar Applications: Due on Wednesday, October 13th. Contact Ms. Connor or Ms. Heffner for questions!
PTSA Hawk Stash: The PTSA has assembled a pantry named the “Hawk Stash” with foodstuffs that can be distributed to students in need. The pantry is well-stocked and will be open to any student on October 13th, (the day prior to Fall Break) to pick up bagged food items for fall break.
Makeup Picture Day: The makeup picture day has changed. The new date is October 11th starting at 7:00 a.m. Just a reminder that all students must have their picture taken if they have not yet. There is no charge to have the picture taken. This picture is used for their ID cards, yearbook and Skyward photo.
Civics Test Requirement: Per state law, in order to graduate, all seniors must take and pass a basic Civics Test. If your student has not taken, or did not pass this test, they should have received two emails through their school email giving them instructions on how to take this test through their canvas account. Contact Karen Brown in the Counseling Center if you have any questions at 801-826-5631 or karen.brown@canyonsdistrict.org
PSAT Test Info: Attention juniors who wish to take the PSAT, it will be administered on Tuesday, October 13th. The fee is $20 and the online registration is through Total Registration. The PSAT is the only means by which to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship, as well as wonderful practice for the ACT and SAT. Online registration ends on Friday, October 8th. See additional information in the flyer below.
AP Test Info: It is time to register and pay for your 2022 AP exams. Please refer to the detailed letter below for a more thorough explanation of this process. You can also contact shannon.kershaw@canyonsdistrict.org with any questions or concerns.
FAFSA Completion Open House will be hosted by Alta High for seniors to get expert help completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Please join us on October 20th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and you’ll be eligible to apply for a FAFSA Completion Scholarship from the Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority.
Updates on Social Media: By now, parents across the country have been alerted to the “Devious Licks” TikTok trend that encourages students to steal or damage school property. We want to thank you for your efforts to strongly discourage your students from participating in this destructive activity. We have since learned of additional monthly TikTok “challenges” that encourage students to participate in yet more disruptive, illegal, and even assaultive behaviors. The latest online “challenge” urges students to video record themselves slapping teachers or school staff members. To be clear, this will not be tolerated. Our school will continue to ensure that students understand our expectations for acceptable behavior. The consequences for the assault of school personnel, or vandalized or stolen school property, may lead to the involvement of law enforcement or disciplinary action in line with Canyons District policies. These continued “challenges” also represent a teachable moment as they highlight the peer pressure students sometimes encounter on social media — one of many topics that our school will be addressing during Digital Citizenship Week, Oct. 18-22. This is a good opportunity to discuss with your child how to use technology safely and responsibly. We want this to be a safe and positive place of learning and want everyone to show their Alta High pride. Thank you for your support.
