Purpose of Drivers' Ed.Purpose: It is the intent of our program to educate students in the state curriculum of driver education. We do this using a three phase program of classroom instruction, range instruction, and road instruction. Driver Education is a quarter credit and is taught during the four quarters of the school year and during the summer (the month of June.) It is our desire to have students complete Driver Education in a timely manner, taking into consideration state laws as well as district and school rules.
Classroom Instruction - This portion of the course covers the state curriculum, including assignments, reading, lectures, projects, quizzes and tests. There are typically 23 school days in the quarter, each lasting about 90 minutes. In order to pass the class the student will need to accumulate at least 70% of the total points in the class and miss no more than 3 class periods. Range Instruction - This is to be completed on the schools driving range found in the south student parking lot. Each student is required to complete six hours of practice on the driving range. The six hours are broken into 3 two hour sessions. In these sessions the students will practice 6 distinct courses that include general driving and parking skills. The range usually lasts about 6 or 7 weeks of the quarter. Points are awarded to their classroom grade for completing the 3 range times. Road Instruction - This phase of the program is to be completed while a certified instructor is sitting next to the student in one of our driver education road cars. This phase consists of 3 hours of driving time and 6 hours of observation time. The phase is broken into four 45 minute drives for each student. Road driving is usually done before or after school, on Saturdays and some non school days. To complete this training the student must have a Learner Permit issued by the Utah Driver License Division. For a student to get a driver license through Alta High School 's driver education program you must obtain a Learner Permit. |
